Curriculum development for online, asynchronous CNA training program, including theory and video content

In 2019, I spearheaded the development of an innovative, blended learning CNA training program at NextStep, which was quickly approved by the Colorado State Board of Nursing. The program was later expanded and approved in Washington and Oregon, utilizing much of the original content.

The program was designed to be accessible and flexible, with a blend of in-person and online requirements. The online coursework was asynchronous, skill-based, and delivered in bite-sized learning modules. It was also mobile-friendly and included a mix of written and video content, along with skill assessments to ensure learners had a thorough understanding of the material.

Angela served as an RN writer and as film talent for video content.

The challenge

As an early-stage startup, NextStep faced the challenge of developing a high-quality, innovative CNA curriculum and launching its product quickly. Our goal was to design content that effectively prepared learners for real-world CNA experiences and ensured successful state certification pass rates. Additionally, we needed to create content that was adaptable to meet regulatory requirements in multiple states, as we expanded our footprint in the market.

The solution

As Product Manager, I aligned goals, drove progress, and managed a team that included:

  • RN writers, researchers, and content editors with expertise in long-term care

  • CNA subject matter experts to represent real-world scenarios faced on the job

  • Manager of Regulatory Services who ensured the end product was approval-ready for state regulatory agencies

  • Psychometrician and team of assessment writers

  • Video Production Manager and contract video production team

I completed a crosswalk analysis which I comparing state CNA training requirements and CNA skills to validate content for development.

I made the decision to shift video production in-house and hire an industry-experienced video production manager to execute all aspects of video content readiness, film production, and talent management, all with my oversight.

I completed the project within a five-month period, including transitioning content to engineering for publication to the app.
